A-State alum Camryn Newton-Smith wins Oceania Championship, bolsters Olympic qualifying resume

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – A Red Wolf is getting closer to howling in Paris.

Camryn Newton-Smith won the heptathlon this month at the Oceania Athletics Championships. The Australian racked up 6070 points in the seven events in Fiji. She continues to build her resume towards a spot in the 2024 Olympics. Newton-Smith captured gold in the Australian Championships in April with a personal best 6180 points.

The Arkansas State alum is currently 16th in the Road to Paris 24 rankings, and on pace to qualify. The qualification period ends June 30th, the top 24 athletes in the event will punch tickets to Paris.

Newton-Smith had a decorated career in Jonesboro, she was a three-time All-American, the 2023 Sun Belt Outdoor Performer of the Year, and captured four conference championships.
