Zac Thomas was expected to be in contention for one of the four qualifying spots to the 2024 CrossFit Games out of the Oceania Semifinal. Thomas, who finished 7th at last year’s Torian Pro, finished 5th in Quarterfinals in the Oceania region. But many were surprised to see Thomas near the bottom of the leaderboard on Event 1 of Semifinals.
Thomas finished the event in 28:58, good for 39th place. That finish effectively put Thomas out of contention for a qualifying spot to the CrossFit Games. Shortly thereafter it was revealed that Thomas had withdrawn from the competition, but no reason was given.
However, Thomas’ coach shared that he actually had a supraventricular tachycardia, SVT for short, episode while competing. Following the event, Thomas was sent to the emergency room to monitor his situation.
SVT is an arrythmia where a very fast or erratic heartbeat that affects the heart’s upper chambers. Essentially the upper chambers of the heart are out of sync with the lower chambers and blood flow throughout the body is diminished.
This was not Thomas’ first bout with SVT. Thomas had experienced SVT twice before, but to a lesser degree.
