Round 2 of World Rugby’s WXV3 series being played in Dubai this weekend will feature a crunch game between arch Pacific rivals Fijiana and Manusina Samoa.
The Fijians are pushing for promotion to tier two of the competition, as are the Samoans but a World Cup place is also on the line for them.
They began the tournament with a dramatic 8-8 draw against the Netherlands, after scoring a try in overtime to square the game, while Fijiana ran in six tries to beat Hong Kong 38-3.
What ever the outcome of the battle of the Pacific, there is no doubt that Fijiana and Manusina are the benchmark for women’s rugby in Oceania right now.
And based on the impact of Fijiana’s bronze medal winnings sevens performance at the Tokyo Olympics, the stronger those two teams get, the greater the number of females who will come forward to take up the sport.
