To the Swiss luxury watch sector, Australia is, quite literally, a world away. Tucked away at the very bottom of the earth, the Oceania region has traditionally been relegated to an afterthought for the marketing specialists, product engineers, and industry executives who control the sector. But the tide is turning.
In celebration of the brand’s 140th anniversary, Swiss watchmaker Breitling has unveiled two exclusive releases for Australia and New Zealand. The Oceania Chronomat B01 42 and Oceania Diamond Chronomat B01 42 Limited Editions offer a refined take on the iconic model’s rugged and durable design, complete with the four distinctive raised rider tabs at the 15-minute marks. Sleek and streamlined, these 42mm Chronomats are every bit a worthy addition to the Breitling line and for once, they’re all ours.
Breitling Oceania Chronomat B01 42 Limited Edition
Limited to just 140 pieces, the Oceania Chronomat B01, the more entry-level of the pair, borrows much of its design language from the standard release. The emblematic “onion” crown, a nod to the line’s aeronautical roots, makes an appearance, with the watch presented on a rubber version of the classic rouleaux bracelet. Flip it over and you’ll find a reference to the piece’s exclusivity, courtesy of a unique “ONE of 140” engraving on the caseback. If it’s something more debonair you’re after, however, Breitling has also got you covered.
The limited Oceania Diamond Chronomat B01 42 follows the same design code as its stablemate, albeit with a few glitzy additions. Limited to 25 pieces, this model features a set of 112 brilliant natural diamonds in a double-row pave framing the bezel to go along with the matte white dial, black subdials and monochrome accents. It is presented on the rouleaux bracelet in stainless steel and again features the signature rider tabs, which punctuate the bezel at the 15-minute marks, allowing wearers to swap between the 15- and 45-minute markers for countdowns or count-ups.
Both limited editions are powered by the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, the Swiss watchmaker’s revered COSC-certified chronometer movement. The column-wheel chronograph design is the same one found in Breitling’s classic Navitimer, Premier, Chronomat, and Top Timer collections, and dishes up 70 hours of power reserve.
Described by Breitling as a “fusion of new-school narrative with a legacy of precision and style”, the latest Ocean exclusive Chronomats are available in limited quantities and priced at AUD$12,190 for the standard model and AUD$22,990 for the Diamond edition.
The latest Breitling Oceania exclusives come amid a sweeping change in perceptions around the Australian watch sector. Despite not being considered a main global exporter by volume or price, data released by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry in 2023 revealed that exports to the Oceania region were up 14.8 per cent. Further, direct shipments to Australia rose by more than 60 per cent across the corresponding period, suggesting a market in the midst of a prime growth phase.
