Australian climber Oceania Mackenzie, also known as Oceana, delivered a near-perfect Boulder and Lead (B&L) performance at the IFSC Oceania Qualifier 2023 in Melbourne on Saturday (25 November) to obtain a Paris 2024 Olympic sport climbing quota spot.
The 21-year-old, who represented her country at Tokyo 2020 in 2021, finished top of the pile after the boulder round with an impressive 99.9 score. The only blemish on her record was down to a fall at the start of the second boulder climb.
With considerable daylight between her and the chasers Maya Stasiuk and Emily Scott established, Mackenzie then laid down a perfect 100 in the lead section to clinch an Olympic berth in Paris 2024 for Australia.
Fellow Australian Campbell Harrison took victory in the men’s Boulder and Lead competition to obtain another quota for the nation for Paris 2024.
A faultless lead performance by the discipline specialist launched him from third place to the top of the standings to win with a combined total of 154.1
Sam Lavender had been leading proceedings after the boulder section with a 68.7 score but Harrison’s supremacy proved too much for the 22-year-old who took second overall.
*As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
