THE future of Papua New Guinea Rugby Union (PNGRU) is walking a very thin tight-rope.
This is because the regional body – the Oceania Rugby Union – has sent a formal notice to query the affairs of the PNG Rugby Union board.
The PNGRU has not issued a statement to this regard, however the notice has gone public since it was issued last Friday, and the board has been given 49 days to respond.
Failure by the board to respond diligently, may lead to sanctions where PNG may be suspended as a member and from participating at future Oceania Rugby Union tournaments.
To add to the doom and gloom, future participation at Olympic, Commonwealth and Pacific Games may also be affected
A summary of the show cause notice indicates PNG may be reprimanded with a view of being suspended per the various clauses under Oceania Rugby’s Inc constitution as stipulated for PNG’s show cause.
As stated on the notice set by Oceania Rugby Union general manager Frank Pulelua, the show cause is due to allegations of non-compliance by the PNGRU with the provisions of the Oceania Rugby Constitution, Regulations and /or Oceania Rugby Governance Principles, to which the executive committee of Oceania Rugby Inc directs the PNGRU to facilitate the following:
1. Annual General Meeting of the PNGRU to be hosted within 49 days of the date of notice, with not less than 35 days notice to the PNGRU members.
2. Election of PNGRU Board to be held at the AGM by Member Unions in accordance with the PNGRU Constitution.
3. Appointment by Oceania Rugby of qualified personnel/panel to conduct an independent inquiry into PNGRU.
4. Consolodation of debt owing to Oceania Rugby Union and enactment of payment schedule as agreed to with PNGRU.
The statement further indicated that if the orders are not adhered to by PNGRU, the following sanctions will be applied:
(a) Suspension of Oceania Rugby Union membership including the right to vote; and
(b) Suspension from participating in all Oceania Rugby competitions.
