11 July 2024 – Day three of the DOVE Saipan International 2024 (9-13 July) unfolded with the excitement of round 16 across all events, building upon the high standards set by last week’s CROWNE PLAZA Northern Marianas Open 2024. Today’s matches at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in Saipan offered unexpected results and fierce competition, beginning at 11 AM local time.
Mixed Doubles: The mixed doubles saw intense battles, with number three seeds Cheng Kai Wen and Liu Chiao-Yun from Chinese Taipei facing off against the CROWNE PLAZA Northern Marianas Open mixed doubles champions, Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara from Japan. Despite a strong lead in the second game, Cheng and Liu ultimately succumbed to the newly crowned champions. New Zealand’s Edward Lau and Shaunna Li also put up a valiant effort but were overpowered by the Chinese Taipei pair, Yu Hsiang Chou and Yang Chu Yun. In a surprising twist, Liao Chao Pang and Lin Yu-Hao from Chinese Taipei defeated the number two seeds from Thailand, Phatharathorn Nipornram and Nattamon Laisuan. Additionally, a domestic showdown saw Chan Yueh Lin and Hung Hsin En from Chinese Taipei secure a place in the quarterfinals against compatriots Cheng Kai and Peng Yu Wei.

Huang Ping-Hsien from Chinese Taipei delivered a captivating performance, defeating Japan’s number six seed Shogo Ogawa in two games. Another riveting match saw Kim Byung Jae of Japan emerge victorious over Hsin Tse Tu from Chinese Taipei after three intense games.

Women’s Singles: The women’s singles category saw a major upset as Yang Yu-Chi from Chinese Taipei defeated Sakura Masuki, the runner-up of the CROWNE PLAZA Northern Marianas Open 2024. In a closely contested match, Huang Ching Ping narrowly overcame Korea’s Lee So Yul in a grueling 67-minute, three-game match. Following, New Zealand’s Shaunna Li faced a tough challenge against number five seed Akari Kurihara from Japan.

Meanwhile, Lin Chuh-Chun and Teng Chun Hsun from Chinese Taipei surprised everyone by defeating the CROWNE PLAZA Northern Marianas Open women’s doubles runner-up team of Miki Kanehiro and Rui Kiyama from Japan in two swift games.

In another intense match, number two seeds Shuntaro Mezaki and Haruya Nishida from Japan ended the run of Korea’s An Yun Seong and Park Kyung Hoon, with An Yun Seong suffering a knee injury in the third game.
