Australian egg farmers gain new biosecurity training tool

Australian egg producers now have access to a free biosecurity fool following a collaboration between egg marketing body Australian Eggs and Think Digital, an immersive technology studio working with agriculture.

The tool includes a virtual tour that incorporates 360 scenes from an egg production facility and interactive elements that teach the learner about biosecurity. It also includes an inbuilt learning assessment feature.

The new tool is particularly aimed at new employees. Its developers note that biosecurity training can be very time consuming when there is a high staff turnover or when a farm uses seasonal workers. The intuitive and easy-to-use virtual biosecurity training tool should optimize and streamline the biosecurity induction experience.

Esther Rand, Innovation and Development manager with Australian Egg explains that famers have reported that biosecurity inductions can be really taxing and time consuming. Australian Egg had listened to this feedback and developed the tool.

According to Think Digital, classroom experience has revealed that a virtual tour can engage the learner 30% more than traditional teaching methods. A 360 virtual tour is particularly effective for biosecurity training as 2D learning methods only allow the learner to look in one direction, while a 360 virtual tour enables them to observe the entire environment.

The new tool can be accessed across platforms, including mobile and desktop and can be downloaded to use offline.

Jessica Parker, Poultry Welfare Manager with Australian Eggs, commented: “We always want to make sure that new employees have a really good understanding of biosecurity before they get onto a farm. I see this tour being really valuable with our onboarding and induction process.”

Timely launch

The launch comes as Australia is recovering from its worst outbreak of avian influenza, with the country’s layer flock being particularly impacted leading to egg shortages

While Oceania has remained free from the H5N1 clade 2.2.4.4b that has spread widely among birds worldwide, causing outbreaks in poultry and infection in a wide range of terrestrial and marine species, experts believe that its arrival is only a question of time.
