10 July 2024 – Day two of the DOVE Saipan International 2024 (9-13 July) featured the round of 32 in men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles events. Play began at 11 am local time at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in Saipan.
Mixed Doubles: The day kicked off with mixed doubles matches, where a number of Northern Mariana Islands pairs faced off against top players from across Asia. In a surprising turn of events, the Korean duo, An Yun Seong and Kim Hye Jeong defeated the CROWNE PLAZA Northern Marianas Open 2024 mixed doubles runner-up from Japan, Tori Aizawa and Hina Osawa. Despite a strong comeback effort from the Japanese pair, the seasoned Koreans maintained their composure to clinch the victory. Another Korean victory came from Kim Byung Jae and Lee So Yul, who overpowered Ma Cheng-Yi and Hung Yu-En of Chinese Taipei in straight games.

Men’s Singles: A major upset occurred in the men’s singles event, where Riku Hatano defeated the newly crowned CROWNE PLAZA Northern Marianas Open men’s singles champion, Cheng Kai from Chinese Taipei, in a thrilling three-game match. Other notable matches included Jia Wei Joel Koh edging out Yi Liu in a nail-biting finish and top seed Viren Nettasinghe, Sri Lankan player whose heading to the Paris 2024 Olympics, securing a win against Chen Chi Ting from Chinese Taipei. New Zealand’s Edward Lau was not able to secure his place to the next round in men’s singles following defeat from Huang Ping-Hsien from Chinese Taipei.

Women’s Doubles: The women’s doubles event saw a major upset as the sister pair Kim Hye Jeong and Kim Yu Jung from Korea defeated the CROWNE PLAZA Northern Marianas Open women’s doubles champions, Mizuki Otake and Miyu Takahashi, in an epic three-game match lasting 80 minutes, setting a new record for the longest match in the Saipan leg tournaments. Additionally, the Korean pair of Lee So Yul and Yoo Seo Yeon advanced to the round of 16, with Lee So Yul now progressing in women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The final match of the day featured a fierce battle between Guam and Saipan, where Sernantie Jimenez and Paulo Quidato of Saipan triumphed over Chen Yang Hu and Yu Xuan Xia of Guam despite initially losing the first game.
